SANTA CRUZ (CITY)

Santa Cruz is the anchor of this coastline — bold, alive, and full of genuinely iconic backdrops. The city has a photographic energy that's hard to match anywhere on the California coast: dramatic ocean cliffs, old-growth campus redwoods, and that unmistakable Santa Cruz light that goes gold and warm in the late afternoon.

 

Natural Bridges State Beach Natural Bridges is one of my favorite spots in the county to work. The natural arch rock frames the ocean in a way that feels almost designed for portraits, and the monarch butterfly grove behind the beach adds an otherworldly layer if you're planning an autumn session. The beach itself is wide and open, which means you have real room to move and compose without tourists stacking up behind you. Arrive an hour before sunset and the light will do most of the work.

 

West Cliff Drive The two-mile stretch of coastal bluff along West Cliff Drive gives you constantly changing compositions — surfers in the water, the historic lighthouse at the west end, and the Pacific spread out below you. For couples who want the feel of wild ocean coast without committing to a full trail hike, this is the answer. It reads dramatic and cinematic even in a quick portrait session.

 

UCSC Redwood Groves The UC Santa Cruz campus sits inside a working redwood forest — the buildings are tucked between old-growth trees on a hillside above the city. For forest ceremony portraits without driving deep into the mountains, the campus groves deliver. The filtered canopy light here is exceptional.

CAPITOLA

Capitola is one of the most visually distinctive places on the California coast, and it photographs exactly as good as it looks. The village has a compact, walkable charm — pastel buildings, a working pier, a beach where Soquel Creek meets the bay — and every corner of it is more colorful than the last.

 

Capitola Beach and the Pier The beach is the heart of Capitola Village, and the pier gives you elevated angles that no other spot in the area can match. At golden hour the reflections off the wet sand turn the whole scene into something almost painterly.

 

The Venetian Court The candy-colored facades along the waterfront are even better in person than in photos. The buildings reflect warm light beautifully, and the narrow passage between them gives an intimate, enclosed feel that's very different from the open beach.

 

Soquel Creek at the Bay Where Soquel Creek widens and meets the bay, the water gets still and reflective. Early-morning sessions here catch mist on the water and empty stretches of sand — quieter and moodier than the main beach.

APTOS

Aptos sits at the heart of California's Central Coast, tucked between Santa Cruz and Capitola. It's a place that doesn't try to impress you — it just does. The beaches are wide and unhurried, the forests are ancient and cool, and the whole area has a relaxed confidence that makes it one of the most naturally beautiful wedding and elopement settings on the coast.

 

Seacliff State Beach Seacliff's long, open shoreline gives couples room to breathe. The SS Palo Alto — the old concrete ship — sits in the water at the south end of the beach and shows up in the background of some of my favorite portraits from this stretch of coast. Plan your session around sunset and the light turns the whole beach soft gold. Unhurried, uncrowded, and genuinely stunning.

 

The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park Less than ten minutes from the beach, Nisene Marks is a second-growth redwood forest that feels like stepping out of time. For couples who want the cathedral feeling of ancient trees without driving to the mountains, this is the answer. The canopy filters the light beautifully, and the trails are private enough for intimate elopement ceremonies.

 

Rio Del Mar Beach and Bluffs Rio Del Mar is the neighborhood beach that locals love and visitors often overlook. The bluffs above the sand offer elevated perspectives that show the full sweep of the coastline, while the beach itself is ideal for barefoot portraits right at the water's edge.

SOQUEL

Soquel sits just inland from Capitola, and the shift in atmosphere is immediate. This is wine country — quiet, agricultural, old California — with small wineries along the creek, historic village buildings, and redwood-backed hillsides that feel a world away from the coast ten minutes to the west.

 

Bargetto Winery Bargetto is one of California's oldest family-owned wineries, established in 1933 and still operating on the banks of Soquel Creek. The property has a relaxed, lived-in beauty — stone and wood, dappled creek light — and it photographs with a warmth that more polished venues rarely match.

 

Soquel Village The old commercial buildings along Soquel Drive give the village a historic character that few coastal California towns still have. Unhurried and photogenic in a way that doesn't announce itself — you turn a corner and realize how well the weathered wood and afternoon light are working together.

 

Redwood Groves off Soquel Drive The hillsides above Soquel are laced with second-growth redwood groves that catch coastal fog and hold it in the canopy through mid-morning. I've located the spots where the light comes through right and the setting feels genuinely wild.

FELTON

Felton is where the Santa Cruz Mountains close in around you. The San Lorenzo Valley is redwood country at its most complete — old-growth trees, a narrow river canyon, fog that lingers into midday. For couples who want a true forest ceremony, not a forest-adjacent one, this is the place.

 

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park The old-growth grove at Henry Cowell is among the finest in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Centuries-old trees, canopy that filters light into shafts rather than flooding in, a forest floor that stays dim and cool and still. The cathedral feeling couples come to the redwoods for — not simulated.

 

Roaring Camp Railroads The historic steam-powered narrow-gauge railroad runs through the redwoods on a route dating to 1875. The combination of living history, working steam engines, and ancient trees creates an atmosphere no other venue in the area can replicate.

 

Fall Creek Unit of Henry Cowell The quieter, less-visited side of the Henry Cowell system — fewer people, more rugged trail through deep second-growth forest alongside a small year-round creek. For couples who want truly secluded, the seclusion here is real.

BONNY DOON

Bonny Doon sits on a ridge above Santa Cruz at around 1,600 feet, and on clear days the views reach from Monterey Bay out to the open Pacific. Part wine country, part wild coast, part fog-draped mountain — it suits couples who want something genuinely off the beaten path.

 

Bonny Doon Vineyard One of the most distinctive wineries in California, known for its Rhône-style wines and a visual aesthetic that matches the unconventional character of the place. Sweeping ridge views, striking architecture, late-afternoon light that goes long and warm. Wine country that owes nothing to the Napa template.

 

Bonny Doon Beach At the base of dramatic coastal cliffs, accessible via a steep trail from the ridge. A locals-only beach with no signs or infrastructure — raw, isolated, extraordinary. The cliffs are vertical, the surf is dramatic, and the setting has an untouched quality the accessible coastal beaches can't replicate.

 

Pine Flat Road Ridge Views Long views across the Santa Cruz Mountains and down toward the bay. On fog-free mornings the light catches the ridgeline in a way that's pure California landscape photography. I know the specific pullouts and clearings that give the best compositions.
